Vintage Afghan Mashwani Wool Runner. Simple, elegant patterns in the borders and at the ends, with four diamond medallions in the center field with the same deep rich red and blue tones.
Size: 93 x 24 in.
A Mashwani runner is a distinct, durable type of hand-knotted and woven tribal rug originating from the Mashwani (or Mushwani) tribe in western and southwestern Afghanistan, primarily around the regions of Herat and Badghis. Characterized by a unique hybrid construction that blends flat-weave kilim with areas of raised, hand-knotted pile, these rugs offer a textured, three-dimensional feel, featuring geometric, diamond-shaped motifs in bold, vegetable-dyed colors like deep red, brown, and cream. Originally made as dowry offerings, Mashwani rugs typically served as a reflection of the bride’s family’s wealth and craftsmanship skill, and most are made as runners not simply for their use in a home but as a path the bride will then walk during her wedding and symbolically throughout her married life, making longer pieces extremely valuable and auspicious.
