Veiled Horizon, Stories of Big Game Fish … Bandini 1939. This book is titled "Veiled Horizon, Stories Of Big Game Fish Of The Sea", by Ralph Bandini and published in New York by The Derrydale Press in 1939. It's a limited and numbered first edition, with only 950 copies were printed, and this is number #58 of those 950 copies, and it is illustrated with photographs. It is bound in green cloth, with gilt-ruled bands and gilt lettering on the spine, gilt-fillet borders and a gilt marlin decoration inside the fillet borders on the front cover, blank endpapers, the half-title, a frontis photo of Avalon Bay off the coast of Santa Catalina Island in California, then the title page, which has the Derrydale colophon, followed by the limitation page and the copyright date of 1939, one page for a Table of Contents, a one-page List of Illustrations, and 222 pages of text, and the book has stories about catching big game fish - swordfish, marlin and tuna - off the coast of Southern California. The book also has a Shakespeare Nylon Casting Line calendar card from 1942 inside, and we've kept that for whoever buys the book. Ralph Baldini (1865 - 1961) was a prominent native Californian, sports-fisherman, and member of the Tuna Club at Santa Catalina Island, and was considered to be one of the greats among the early pioneers of big game fishing in California. He served as attorney for the newly formed Catalina Yacht Club in 1924 and was inducted into the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Hall of Fame in 1999. He wrote another book about game fishing off Santa Catalina Island and one about a fellow Tuna Club member, J. A. Coxe, and his writing style was likened to that of Zane Grey's fishing stories. (Yes, Zane Grey wrote fishing stories as well as westerns!) The book measures 10 1/4 x 7 5/8 in. wide, and in great condition. For limited and numbered editions, low numbers in the print run usually are of better quality than higher numbers in the print run, and 58 is low in the print run. The binding here is tight and the pages and photos are exceptionally clean, with faded gilt on the spine and front cover, just a speck of rubbing at the crown and heel of the spine, a speck of brown spots on the front flyleaf, a small spot on page 140 and 141, lots of uncut pages in the book, and an interesting book about angling and big game fishing on the waters off the California coast. #136 #1596
