This angling book is titled "Goin' Fishin', The Story Of The Deep-Sea Fisherman Of New England, written by Wesley George Pierce and illustrated by the author himself, published by the Marine Research Society of Salem, Massachusetts in 1934, and the book is a first trade edition - you can tell because the dates on the title page and copyright page match and there are no other printings. The book has blue pebbled boards with gilt lettering and gilt bands on the spine, blank endpapers with the bookplate of Edward John Mitton on the front paste-down and the owner's name inscribed on the front flyleaf, the half-title, a photograph of a schooner out of Boston on the frontis, then the title page with a vignette of the Gloucester Fishing Schooner Kearsarge, the copyright page is dated 1934, a one-page Preface, two pages of Contents, a three-page list of Illustrations, 271 pages of text, an Appendix about Nautical Terms Used on Fishing Vessels that runs from 272 to 288, a second Appendix about Fisherman's Lore and Superstitions that runs to page 292, and a third Appendix about New England Fishing Vessels that goes to page 318, a five-page Index, and a list of Publications by the Marine Research Society at the rear. Wesley George Pierce was a 20th century American author and artist known for his marine paintings. He was born in Maine about 1869 and lived in Rockland, Mass., near Plymouth, according to the 1940 census, and apparently he came from a family of fishermen. There was a limited and numbered edition of 97 copies printed before the first trade edition came out, and one note says there were only 900 copies of the first trade edition printed, so there aren't many copies of the first trade edition printed either. The book is 8vo. and measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. wide, with a tight binding, and the pages, text and illustrations are very clean. There's bright gilt lettering on the spine, very light brown spots on the endpapers and a couple of spots on the margins of the text and that's it, and a slight bump on one tip and a whisper of rubbing on the bottom edge of the back cover, and an attractive book about the daily lives of salt-water fishermen in New England and how the fish were caught.
