U.S. Thermoplastic Cases with Tintypes 1850's

This lot consists of four thermoplastic cases with tintypes. The first case shows a tintype of a young man in a suit and white dress shirt. The tintype is a sixteenth plate and the embossed covers feature scrollwork that is repeated on the front and back. The velvet lining is faded and the case has a snug clasp. The reddish-brown case was probably made in the 1850’s and has a slight nick in the top left corner, and it measures 2 1/8 x 1 13/16 in. wide. The second case is black with two tintypes of children, likely brother and sister. The tintypes are sixteenth plates and hand-tinted, and the embossed covers feature elaborate scrollwork that is repeated on the front and back of the case. The case has a snug clasp and was probably made in the 1850‘s, and it measures 2 1/8 x 1 15/16 in. wide. The third case is black and has a tintype of a young man with a suit and large bowtie. The tintype is a sixteenth plate and the cheeks are hand-colored. The embossed covers feature a geometric pattern with a cross at the center and the motif is repeated on front and back. The velvet lining features a flower and has light wear. The case has a snug clasp and was probably made in the 1850‘s, and it measures 2 1/8 x 1 7/8 in. wide. The last case has a tintype of a gentleman who sports a suit and white shirt with a lace collar. The tintype is a ninth plate that is hand-tinted. The embossed covers feature scrollwork with a fancy ribbon, and the motif is repeated on front and back. The velvet lining has green scrollwork and the case has a snug clasp. The case was probably made in the 1850’s and measures 3 x 2 1/2 in. wide.
