This lot consists of two photo booklets from Massachusetts published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. One is titled "Cuttyhunk. The Home of Heroes", by C.E. Tripp, published in New Bedford, Mass., in 1893. It is a first edition, according to WorldCat, and it is a contemporary brochure with Albertype photos of Cuttyhunk, one of the outermost Elizabeth Islands and about 16 miles from Falmouth, Mass., or about an hour's ferry ride from New Bedford. Cuttyhunk was an outpost for harvesting sassafras in 1602 and possibly the first English settlement in New England; the name probably came from a Native American word for "land's end". There are 16 single-sided photos along with the title page and covers, with captions, and the book measures 5 1/8 x 7 1/8 in. wide, and a great photographic record of the island in the late 1800's.
The other photo booklet is titled "Martha's Vineyard, Views of Cottage City, Vineyard Haven, Gay Head, Edgartown", with a copyright date of 1904 and published by George E. Dunbar of Malden, Mass. It is also a contemporary travel brochure with photographs and captions of noted landmarks on Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts, just south of Cape Cod. The booklet measures 5 1/8 x 7 1/8 in. wide, with 57 photos on 42 pages, and a great historical record of the island from that time period.
Both bindings are tight, with clean photographs. Cuttyhunk has bright gilt lettering on the front cover and light brown spots on the front and rear, with the original gold string binding in great condition and a 1 1/2 inch tear along the left side of the front cover; Martha's Vineyard is in very good condition, with a couple of brown specks on the back cover and that's it. Two photo records of high quality.
