This lot consists of fourteen pieces from the Lexington Centennial Celebration of 1875 held to honor the minutemen and militia who fought at Lexington Common on April 18 and April 19, 1775. The lot includes a rare Centennial badge and medal from 1875, an order of service to tell people what the sequence of events were going to be, tickets to a centennial dinner and promenade, a Bill of Fare for the dinner (what the eats were for dinner), invitations and tickets to the Grand Ball to close the celebration, and a closing ceremony booklet. There is also a newspaper (the Boston Weekly Journal) which came out a week after the celebration to publicize and highlight all the festivities, a lady's ticket to a Grand Levee and Ball and a ticket to the dedication of Memorial Hall in Lexington from 1871, an invitation to attend a to-do on behalf of George Harrington (a descendent of Daniel and Levi Harrington, who were actually at the battle on the commons in 1775), and a letter about John Muzzy's land being deeded to the town, with provisions in the deed that would keep people from putting buildings or other "obstructions" on the common, so the place would be preserved for future generations to appreciate what happened on April 18 and 19, 1775. Muzzy's land was where a large part of the battle in Lexington took place - the "Common" or the town "green" - and the land had a huge amount of historical significance, not just for the people of Lexington, but for the people of America. The badge and medal are about 9 3/4 inches long and read "Lexington Minute Men Centennial Anniversary, Honorary Member" in gilt and are in very good condition, with no fraying or observable wear, the tickets and booklets and invitations are all in very good condition, and the only item that shows wear is the newspaper that highlighted the ceremonies; the newspaper is four pages long, it's dated "Thursday Morning, April 22, 1875" and has folds and creases and light wear, and the lead on the front page about the festivities reads "1775. The 1875 Centennial Celebrations... Hanging of the Lights on the Old North Church Steeple ... Concord and Lexington ... How the Day Was Celebrated ... 100,000 People Celebrating ... Paul Revere's Ride ...", so the significance of the centennial is definitely captured here. An unusual collection to celebrate and honor the battle of Lexington in 1775. Size: 44 1/4 x 29 1/4 (newspaper). #1658
