Traditional Russian Arctic bone carving is a centuries-old art practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Russian Far North, especially the Chukchi, Yupik, and Nenets. Using materials such as walrus tusk, whale bone, and reindeer antler, artisans carve intricate scenes of Arctic life—hunters in kayaks, reindeer herds, sea mammals, and mythological spirits—often enhanced with fine engraved lines filled with dark pigment. The craft developed both as a practical skill, producing tools and ceremonial objects, and as a storytelling medium that preserves cultural memory and spiritual beliefs tied to the harsh polar environment. Centers such as Uelen in Chukotka became famous during the 20th century for refined miniature sculptures and scrimshaw-style engravings that combine traditional themes with highly detailed craftsmanship, making Arctic bone carving one of the most distinctive forms of northern Russian folk art.
