Tissot SA was founded in 1853 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile Tissot. The father-son team initially produced watches in their home, with Charles-Emile later traveling across the Russian Empire to expand sales and establishing Russia as their greatest market, even reaching the Tsar’s court. In 1929,the global financial collapse prompted an alliance with fellow watchmaker Omega SA under the umbrella name Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère (SSIH). Tissot continued to build its brand, becoming the official timekeeper for various world championships and Formula One teams.
Despite a major downturn during the 1970s Quartz Crisis that left the company insolvent, Tissot was revived and ultimately became part of the Swatch Group (formerly SMH), which grew into the largest watch company in history. Tissot operates with the motto “Innovators by Tradition” and a mission statement of “gold value at silver price.” Today, Tissot is classified as the Swatch Group’s mid-range market product line, with its headquarters remaining in Le Locle to ensure its status as entirely Swiss-made.
