Tissot SA was founded in Le Locle, Switzerland by Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile Tissot in 1853. The father and son team turned their own home in the Neuchatel canton of the Jura Mountains into a small factory, splitting the casemaking and watchmaking between them at first. In 1858 Charles-Emile took a journey across the Russian Empire selling their savonnette pocket watches, using word of mouth to turn Russia into their greatest market. The brand became popular even with the Tsar’s court, prompting Charles-Emile’s son Charles to move to Moscow and open a new branch office. In 1929 the global financial collapse brought the entire watch industry to a standstill, and fellow Swiss watchmaker Omega SA forged an alliance with them under the leadership of Paul Tissot-Daguette, under the umbrella name Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère (SSIH). Since then Tissot has become the official timekeeper for the world championships in cycling, motorcycling, fencing, ice hockey, as well as sponsoring Formula One racing cars for Lotus, Renault, and Sauber. The company motto/slogan of Tissot is “Innovators by Tradition,” and its mission statement is “gold value at silver price.” The quartz crisis and recession of the 1970s devastated the watch industry and the company became insolvent, with the creditor banks assuming control in 1981. In 1983 the firm, having absorbed other assets by then including the enormous movement and parts maker ASUAG (Allgemeine Gesellschaft der Schweizerischen Uhrenindustrie), became a holding company called Société Suisse de Microélectronique et d’horlogerie (known as SMH). In 1998 they took the name Swatch Group, eventually becoming the largest watch company in history with 31,000 employees in over 50 countries around the world. Today the Tissot brand is officially classified as their “mid-range market products” and the headquarters remain in Le Locle, to keep them entirely Swiss-made.
