Avalokiteshvara is a bodhisattva revered in Mahayana Buddhism as the embodiment of infinite compassion and mercy. Often depicted with multiple arms, heads, or eyes to symbolize the ability to perceive and aid countless beings simultaneously, Avalokiteshvara is called upon to relieve suffering and guide practitioners toward enlightenment. In East Asia, this bodhisattva is known as Guanyin in China and Kannon in Japan, frequently portrayed in serene, graceful forms, sometimes holding a lotus, vase, or rosary. Avalokiteshvara’s mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is widely recited as a spiritual invocation, emphasizing the connection between compassion, wisdom, and the alleviation of suffering in the world.
