Thornton Utz (1914-1999) was born in Memphis, Tennessee and studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and gained prominence in the 1940s and 50s, renowned for his illustrations and portrait paintings and developing close working friendships with Coby Whitmore and Ben Stahl, forming the Chicago Gang of Illustrators with them. He contributed over 50 covers to the Saturday Evening Post and created advertisements for major companies like Coca-Cola and General Electric. His portrait work includes notable figures such as President Jimmy Carter and Princess Grace of Monaco. He moved to Sarasota, Florida in the mid 60s when his wife fell ill, and founded a cartography business. He also made stained-glass windows for the Catholic Church of the Incarnation in Sarasota, Florida, reflecting his diverse artistic talents, and passed away at his home in 1999.
