Thomas Daniell (1749-1840) and his nephew William Daniell (1769–1837) were English artists celebrated for their detailed and evocative landscapes, particularly of India. Traveling to India in the 1780s, they produced a vast series of paintings and aquatints documenting the architecture, temples, and natural scenery of the subcontinent, blending topographical accuracy with a romanticized aesthetic. Thomas, trained in classical art, provided compositional guidance and dramatic framing, while William, a master draftsman, executed delicate details and luminous watercolors. Their work, published in series such as Oriental Scenery, offered Europeans a window into the grandeur and exoticism of colonial India, shaping Western perceptions of the region and leaving a lasting legacy in the tradition of travel and landscape art.
