Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden in the Netherlands in 1606, and after studying with several prominent history painters he opened his own studio around 1625 and began taking on students within a few years. He moved to Amsterdam in 1631, becoming a successful portrait painter for wealthy patrons. He married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634, but his personal life was marked by tragedy, with her and three of their four children dying young. Despite continued popularity for his etchings and paintings, Rembrandt faced severe financial difficulties in the 1650s due to his lavish spending and collecting habits. He eventually declared bankruptcy and was forced to sell his house and many possessions. He had complicated relationships with his housekeeper, Hendrickje Stoffels, who passed away in 1663, as well as a maid, leading to more personal and financial turmoil. His only surviving son, Titus, died in 1668, leaving him deeply distressed, and contributed to his impoverished death in 1669, having outlived most of his family. His work was incredibly varied in subject matter, from portraits and landscapes to biblical scenes, and today his masterpieces, which include about 300 paintings, are universally celebrated and studied by art historians and students for their use of light and shadow and profound human insight. He is still regarded as one of the most well-known and admired painters in Western art history.
