Théophile Steinlen (1859-1923) was a Swiss-born French painter, printmaker, and illustrator best known for his depictions of urban life and his iconic posters featuring cats and cabaret scenes in Paris. After moving to Montmartre in the 1880s, he became closely associated with the bohemian milieu, producing work for newspapers, magazines, and advertising while capturing the everyday struggles and pleasures of working-class Parisians. Steinlen’s style combined realism with a lyrical, sometimes whimsical sensibility, characterized by fluid line work and a keen eye for character and gesture. His most famous works, including posters for Le Chat Noir cabaret, helped define the visual identity of fin-de-siècle Paris and remain celebrated for their charm, social insight, and artistic innovation.
