Théodore Rousseau (1812–1867) was a French landscape painter and a leading figure of the Barbizon School, known for his dedication to painting directly from nature at a time when academic conventions favored idealized scenes. Born in Paris, Rousseau rejected the rigid standards of the official Salon, often facing repeated rejections before gaining recognition later in life. He spent much of his career in the village of Barbizon near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he produced deeply observed, atmospheric landscapes that emphasized natural light, texture, and mood. His work influenced the development of Realism and paved the way for the Impressionists, securing his legacy as a pioneer of modern landscape painting.
