The Story Of Prout’s Neck By Rupert Sargent Holland, The Prouts Neck Association, Prouts Neck, Maine 1924, with sage green boards, a paper label on the front cover, blank endpapers, an illustrated frontis of a painting by Winslow Homer (“Weather Beaten”), a dedication page to Frank Moss, a list of illustrations, a map of an eighteen-hole golf course at Drout’s Neck, 67 pages of text, a Colonial Chronology from 1603 to 1763 on page 65, a clean fold-out map of Prout’s Neck by J. W. Holland from 1910 at the rear, and a key to the Holland map on page 66 which says “ Names of owners or occupants of cottages, Prouts Neck, Maine: 1924”, and no other date after that in the book, so the book is a first edition. The book is a brief history of Prout’s Neck, which is part of Scarborough, Maine; the early history of Black Point and Scarborough are touched upon, including wars with the French and Indians, and it has a guide to who lived in Prout’s Neck at that time - individual property owners - and the most famous resident of this exclusive summer enclave was Winslow Homer, the American painter, who lived and worked there from 1884 until his death in 1910; that’s why his painting adorns the frontispiece, and his original studio is now open as an exhibit through the Portland Museum of Art. The map of the golf course at Prout’s Neck in Scarborough is printed between pages 62 and 63; the map was drawn by the architect, Wayne E. Stiles, and it shows the yardages for each hole too - the course was only 6045 yards long back then, pretty short by modern standards. The author also published several other books, two of which were titled “Historic Railroads” (1927) and “Historic Adventures: Tales From American History” (1913). The book measures 7 x 5 in. wide and has soiling on the front cover, browning on the margins of the endpapers, light browning on the title page and dedication page, occasional brown spots in the text, but the text is actually pretty clean, and a crease on the edge of page 30. A short history of Prout’s Neck and a rare title of Maine and New England history. #59 #1712
