Florida Days, By Margaret Deland, Author Of John Ward, Preacher; The Old Garden And Other Verses, Etc. Illustrated By Louis K. Harlow, Boston, Little, Brown, And Company 1889; 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, gilt titles, six compartments with elaborate gilt tooling, marbled boards, half title, a beautiful chronograph colored frontis of the Old Gates near St. Augustine, a date of 1889 on the copyright page followed by a dedication page to Lorin Deland, a five-page Preface, a Contents page and a four-page List of Illustrations, 200 pages of text, and the top edge is gilt. This is a first edition about St. Augustine and the nearby St. Johns River. (It has a single date and the dates on the title page and copyright page match, so it is a first edition; see A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions, Compiled by Bill McBride, 585 Prospect Avenue, West Hartford CT 06105.) Margaret Deland (1857-1945) wrote this early travel account through St. Augustine and along the St. Johns River in the 1880’s, with reminiscences of the scenery, natural history, and the local people of the time, some of it in dialect; she was probably a member of the noted Deland family that put its imprint on the Daytona area of Florida. The book measures 8 3/4 x 6 3/8 in. wide, it is clean and tight, with just very light rubbing along the heel of the spine and the tips. A beautiful copy of this book about a river, a magnificent town, and the early east coast of Florida. #60 #1707
