Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852) was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He set English verse to old Irish tunes, which marked the transition in popular Irish culture from Irish to English. Politically, Moore was recognized as a press or squib writer who wrote short witty or sarcastic pieces for the aristocratic Whigs, and in Ireland he was considered a Catholic patriot. He defended the Church in Ireland against both evangelizing Protestants and uncompromising lay Catholics.
The book measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches wide and is in great condition. The binding is tight and bright, the pages and illustrations are clean, with just light rubbing at the heel of the spine, a small chip on page 79, a small tear in the margin on 336, and small brown spots on a couple of pages and that’s it, and a very attractive copy of the works of Thomas Moore.
