The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore 1873.

Size: 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 in.

This beautiful book is titled The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore, published in Edinburgh in 1873 by William Nimmo. The book is 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, gilt lettering, gilt devices, and “1873” in gilt at the bottom of the spine, soft gray endpapers, the title page has an engraving of Saint Kevin’s Bed, and the copyright page says the book was printed in Edinburgh by Lorimer and Gillies. Then the Memoirs of Thomas Moore from iii - x, six pages of Contents (xi - xvi), the text runs from page 3 to 481, followed by Notes that run to 496, and all the edges are gilt. The text has black-ruled  borders on each page and there are several black-and-white illustrations in the book too.

Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852) was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He set English verse to old Irish tunes, which marked the transition in popular Irish culture from Irish to English. Politically, Moore was recognized as a press or squib writer who wrote short witty or sarcastic pieces for the aristocratic Whigs, and in Ireland he was considered a Catholic patriot.  He defended the Church in Ireland against both evangelizing Protestants and uncompromising lay Catholics.

The book measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches wide and is in great condition. The binding is tight and bright, the pages and illustrations are clean, with just light rubbing at the heel of the spine, a small chip on page 79, a small tear in the margin on 336, and small brown spots on a couple of pages and that’s it, and a very attractive copy of the works of Thomas Moore.
