\William I the Lion, sometimes known by the nickname “Garbh the Rough” (c. 1142-1214), reigned as King of Scots from 1165 to 1214. His 48-year-long reign was the longest for a Scottish monarch before the Union of the Crowns in 1603. In 1166, during his country-wide tour to establish his control of the kingdom, visited the Burgh of Lanark in South Lanarkshire. Given it’s strategic position near the city of Hamilton, he had a castle built there and provided a large silver bell to be used for the collection of tolls and to tell the hour for the county. In 1628 a horse racing competition used the bell as a trophy, eventually commissioning a replica to replace it in the 20th Century as the original was deemed too valuable. As of 2016 the town had a population of 9,050, with the original bell on display to the public.
