Stella Sullivan was born in Houston, Texas on October 11th, 1924, and spent most of her life there, studying privately from an early age with local artists like Ola Davidson, Emma Cherry, Ruth Uhler, and Grace John before taking formal classes at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She studied architecture at Rice University, sculpture at the School of Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, and obtained her masters at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1954, returning to Houston to become a teacher at numerous universities over the course of her seventy-year-long career. Her modernist works were heavily influenced by her Catholic upbringing, and she had countless solo exhibitions and was part of dozens of arts organizations with many of her works held in the permanent collections of museums throughout Texas as well as in Indiana and New Mexico. Her final solo show was held in 2014, three years before her death on December 24th, 2017.
