Stan Berning was born in New Bremen, Ohio in 1951. He became interested in art in high school and took courses at Oberlin College in Ohio and at Earlham College in Indiana. In 1976 he moved to New Mexico to teach art, eventually settling in Santa Fe after taking a plate making workshop there in 1981. He learned about printmaking and worked as the studio assistant at Graphics Workshop from 1983 to 1986 before striking out on his own, opening the Stan Berning Contemporary Gallery in 1991. His abstract images became popular with visiting tourists, and eventually he closed the gallery in 1995 to focus on his art full time, traveling around the world for annual exhibits at galleries and museums in Paris, San Francisco, and Tokyo. His work and life were the subjects of the 2005 film Off the Map, based partially on his year-long journey painting up the West Coast of America that also was the basis of his bestselling memoir. Today his pieces are found in countless public, private, and corporate collections across the globe, including Hilton Hotels, Merrill Lynch, and Hallmark Inc.
