St. Anthony of Padua, a 13th-century Franciscan friar and renowned preacher, is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church, often invoked as the patron saint of lost items. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, as Fernando Martins, he joined the Franciscan Order and took the name Anthony, later gaining fame for his eloquent sermons, deep theological knowledge, and compassionate ministry. Known for his humility and miraculous deeds, including reported visions and the ability to preach to animals, he quickly became a popular figure throughout Europe. He died in Padua, Italy, in 1231 and was canonized less than a year later. His feast day is celebrated on June 13, and his image—often shown holding the Christ Child or a lily—remains a familiar and cherished presence in churches and homes worldwide.
