Becara, a furniture and home goods shop headquartered in Madrid, Spain, was founded in 1964 by the female entrepreneur Begoña Zunzunegui after her education in England and the United States showed her how isolated and unfashionable Fascism had made her home country. She pioneered Spain’s modern home decor scene throughout the late 1960s and 70s by importing international styles like Portuguese glass, British antiques, Italian ceramics, and more. One of the first Western businesswomen to travel solo throughout Asia after World War II, she successfully expanded relationships with manufacturers in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and India, and she organized trade and furniture fairs starting in the 1980s. Today Becara continues as a family run business with factories in numerous countries and a global market reach.
