Ikat (meaning “to bind” in Malayo-Polynesian languages) is a dyeing technique originating from Southeast Asia that patterns textiles using resist dyeing on the yarns before the fabric is woven. Ikat weaving traditions are generally divided between Daic-speaking peoples in mainland Southeast Asia and the Austronesian peoples spread across Indonesia, the Philippines, and as far as Madagascar. While most prominently associated with Indonesia, where the technique is widespread, similar independent resist-dyeing methods developed in other parts of the world, including India, Japan (where it is called kasuri), and the Americas. The resulting fabrics are renowned for their distinctive, often slightly blurred, designs created by the complex pre-weaving dyeing process.
