"Miao" is a modern Chinese term used to categorize a diverse group of ethnic peoples predominantly living in the mountains of southern China and Mainland Southeast Asia who are descended from tribes defeated by the Yanhuang in 2500 B.C. Today, the Miao are the largest ethnic minority group in China without an autonomous region, with some sub-groups, most notably the Hmong people, having migrated to Southeast Asia and Western nations. The umbrella group is not strictly defined by language or ethnicity, as some subgroups are Mienic-speaking and others Hmongic-speaking, and compared to most Confucian-principled Chinese cultures Miao culture generally places fewer restrictions on women’s societal roles. They are renowned for their exceptional skill in creating traditional clothing and handicrafts, including intricate embroidery, weaving, batik, and paper-cutting, as well as distinctive handmade silver jewelry, which features fine decorative patterns.
