John Cook was born in Hollywood, California in 1947, and first became interested in art glass while studying under John Burton for two years before receiving a scholarship to Brooks Institute of Fine Arts, obtaining his B.F.A. in 1972. He subsequently started Phoenix Glass Studio with two partners, selling his partnership in 1982 in order to create his own solo company, John Cook Studios, in Santa Barbara. In 1990 he moved his family to Gearhart, Oregon, transferring his workshop into an old gas station on Highway 101 and building an adjoining art gallery to showcase his signature fish glasses and tiles, as well as chandeliers, lamps, wall sconces, bowls, vases, perfume bottles, wall platters and more. Cook passed away in 2013, and his pieces are now found in galleries, museums, and private collections around the country.
