The blue-green shan shui (translated as “mountain-water”) is a specific type of the Chinese painting style, and usually tends to refer to an “ancient style” (7th to 17th Century) rather than modern ones. The main colors of the paintings are deep blues and greens, with more coverage and darker tones overall than later works that tend to leave abundant white space for poems and to help direct the rigid methods shan shui painters adhere to. In the early period it was painted using mineral dyes, and originated with Li Sixun (651-716) a noble of the Tang Dynasty who is attributed with founding the Northern School of landscape painting. Similar styles appeared before the Tang dynasty, especially in the period of the Six Dynasties, although like much of the form the specifics of the style were codified with the influence of neo-Confucianism. The style reached its peak in the late Ming Dynasty and is still produced today, although it is no longer as prevalent as the softer, more symbolist, less realistic style of the Southern School.
