A South American mola is a vibrant, handcrafted textile traditionally made by the Guna (also known as Kuna) people of coastal Panama and Colombia. Created using a reverse appliqué technique, molas are composed of multiple layers of brightly colored fabric, carefully cut and sewn to form intricate patterns, often depicting animals, plants, mythology, or abstract designs. Originally used as panels on women’s blouses, molas are both wearable art and a key expression of Guna cultural identity. Over time, they have become highly collectible folk art pieces, celebrated for their bold color palettes, complex craftsmanship, and symbolic storytelling.
