Replogle Globes was started by Luther I. Replogle (1902-1981) when, in 1930, he began selling globes which he crafted by hand alongside his wife in his apartment in Chicago, using maps from England. His vision was to make globes a common feature in people’s households, rather than something found only in academic settings. When the company started, Replogle made globes by buying printed globe sheets from another company, cutting them into strips called gores, and painstakingly hand-fitting the gores together and assembling the globes by hand. As the company grew, Luther was able to hire cartographers to help create exclusive maps to be printed for the globes. Replogle gained popularity by making globes with innovative materials early on, including metal globes, light-up globes (in glass, cardboard, and plastic), inflatable plastic globes, transparent globes, a cube-shaped globe, and a wide variety of globe stands. In addition to globes of Earth, Replogle also makes globes of Venus, Mars, the Moon, and the celestial sphere. Luther sold his growing company to Meredith Publishing (owner of Better Homes and Garden magazine) in 1959, although he was kept on as head until his retirement in 1969 when he was appointed by President Richard Nixon to become ambassador to Iceland. Luther Replogle had created another company, Scanglobe, in 1963, and after his death in 1981 Replogle Globes purchased Scanglobe’s remaining assets. In 1988 the company moved to England under a new owner, before returning to the United States in 2003. Herff Jones absorbed the company in 2010, making it part of the Herff Jones Education Division, and the company was moved from the Chicago area to Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2014, when Herff Jones announced that they would sell part of the division and close Replogle Globes, a long-time employee named Joe Wright expressed interest in an employee buyout of the company. Ultimately a group consisting of four former employees recruited investors and purchased Replogle Globes from Herff Jones, moving the operation back to Illinois in Hillside, just a few miles from the original location. While Replogle Globes continues to offer the traditional lines of globes such as heirloom floor models with hand crafted globe balls and wooden bases, the line has continued to grow to include interactive smart globes such as the Intelliglobe II, a designer series globes for the home/office décor market as well as custom designed globes for brands and companies around the world. Today, Replogle is by far the world’s largest manufacturer of globes.
