This is a six-volume set of prose works by Sir Walter Scott, all published in 1827. The formal title is "The Miscellaneous Prose Works Of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. In Six Volumes", published by Cadell And Co. in Edinburgh and by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, And Green in London in 1827, and printed by Ballantyne and Co. in Edinburgh, and it's a first edition set, according to WorldCat. The books are 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with red and black labels, gilt lettering, and elaborate gilt tooling on the spines, marbled boards, marbled endpapers with a Hoar armorial bookplate on the front paste-downs, then a half title and the title pages, they run to different lengths, and all the edges are marbled. Vol. I is about the Life Of Dryden, with eleven pages of Advertisements in the front (i - xi), three pages of Contents (xii - xiv) and 533 pages of text. Vol. II is titled "Life of Swift" and has three pages of Contents, 495 pages of text, and an Appendix that runs from 496 to 516, including a family tree for the Family of Swift. Volume III is titled "Biographical Memoirs" and has one page of Contents, two pages of Advertisements, and 557 pages of text that cover different authors: Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollett, Richard Cumberland, Oliver Goldsmith, Laurence Sterne, Henry Mackenzie, Horace Walpole, Clara Reeve, Mrs. Ann Radcliffe, Alain Rene Le Sage, Charles Johnstone, and Robert Bage, so great source material for these authors. Volume IV is titled "Biographical Memoirs" and covers other authors in 481 pages of text: Charlotte Smith, Sir Ralph Sadler, John Leyden M.D., Miss Seward, Daniel De Foe, Duke of Buccleuch, Lord Somerville, King George III, Lord Byron, and The Duke of York. Vol V is titled "Paul's Letters To His Kin Folk &c." and has eight pages of Contents, 406 pages of text, an Appendix that runs to 439, and an Abstract of the Eyrbiggia-Saga [about Iceland], for 502 pages in all. And the last volume - Vol. VI - is titled "Chivalry, Romance, The Drama" and has one page of Contents and 470 pages of text. The books are 8vo. and measure 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 in. wide, with tight bindings and clean text, with occasional brown spots on the title page and on the front and rear endpapers and in the margins of Volume I, but after that, there are just touches of brown spots here and there in the books, and most of the pages are very bright and clean. There's very light rubbing on the heels and crowns, light rubbing along the edges and at the tips, and some tips are slightly curled in, but overall a solid set with great resource material for people who can appreciate Scott. And for those who don't know, "Bart." stands for Baronet", so Walter Scott was a baronet and a Sir. #59 #1546
