This is a first edition three-volume set of "The Fortunes Of Nigel", written by Sir Walter Scott and published in Edinburgh by Constable in 1822. The set comes in the original blue paper boards and the title page reads "The Fortunes Of Nigel. By The Author Of 'Waverley, Kenilworth' &c. Knifegrinder. Story? Lord bless you! I have none to tell, sir. Poetry Of The Anti-Jacobin. In Three Volumes. Edinburgh: Printed For Archibald Constable And Co. Edinburgh; and Hurst, Robinson, And Co., London, 1822. The first edition was published concurrently in Edinburgh, by Constable, and in London, by Hurst, Robinson and Co. on May 29, 1822, in a print run of 12,000 copies and priced at one and a half guineas. It was published anonymously, without Scott's name, and it was part of the "Waverley" series of novel he began writing in 1814, but didn't publicly acknowledge he was the author until 1827. Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) was a Scottish historian, novelist, poet, and playwright, and many of his works are considered classics of European and Scottish literature. They include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and Lady Of The Lake, among others. The books here are 1/2 bound, with paper labels on the spines that read "The Fortunes Of Nigel. By The Author of Waverley, Kenilworth, &c. In Three Vols." in the original blue-gray paper covered boards, with blank endpapers, the front flyleaves are inscribed "Eliza M. A. Bloom", then the half titles and title pages, a leaf that says "Printed By James Ballantyne and Co. Edinburgh", the text, and they come with boxed slipcases. Volume I has an Introductory Epistle that is 48 pages long (i - lxviii) and the text is 311 pages, Volume II has 334 pages of text, and Volume III has 349 pages of text,, as well as six pages of ads at the rear for "Works Published By Archibald Constable and Co. Edinburgh. New Editions …" The books are 8vo. and measure 8 x 5 in. wide, with tight bindings and clean text, faint brown spots in some of the margins and on the endpapers, Volume I is missing some of the cloth at the top of the spine, but it doesn't touch the paper label, it also has bumps and light wear at the heel, wear along the edges of the spine and at two tips, and the tips are curled in. The other two volumes have complete spines and paper labels, Volume II has some brown spots at the beginning of the book, light wear and bumps at the heel and crown, light wear along the edge of the front spine, and the tips are slightly turned in, and Volume III has bumps and light wear at the heel and crown and the tips are slightly turned in. The slipcases have five raised bands, six compartments with gilt borders and gilt lettering, and "Edin. 1822" in gilt at the base, the slipcase for Volume III has a horizontal piece that is detached at the top, and there is wear at the base of slipcase for Volume I and modest wear at the heel and crown for the other two slipcases. and a tad at the tips. Still a complete first edition set that is solid and has the original paper covered boards, and was written by one of Scotland's finest. #58 #1547
