SS United States was a landmark American ocean liner built in 1950–1951 and remains the largest passenger ship ever constructed entirely in the United States. On her 1952 maiden voyage, she shattered transatlantic speed records in both directions, earning the Blue Riband and becoming the fastest ocean liner ever built—a title she still holds. Designed by naval architect William Francis Gibbs, the ship used lightweight aluminum throughout much of its structure to maximize speed while incorporating advanced fireproofing and safety standards. Although conceived as a luxury passenger liner, she was also engineered for rapid conversion into a wartime troop carrier capable of transporting thousands of soldiers. In service from 1952 to 1969, the SS United States carried celebrities, immigrants, and everyday travelers, ultimately becoming an enduring symbol of postwar American innovation and transatlantic travel.
