Bird-and-flower painting, or Huaniaohua, is a treasured genre of Chinese art that originated in the Tang Dynasty and reached its artistic peak during the Song Dynasty. Characterized by its tranquil Naturalism, the style depicts the quiet elegance and spirituality of the Chinese landscape, often focusing on subjects like flora, fauna, and insects. While experiencing a revival in the Ming Dynasty, this influential art form had already spread across East Asia and reached as far as Iran, remaining popular through modern masters like Qi Baishi.
