The Schofield Company, a Baltimore-based silver company known for its "Baltimore Rose" pattern, was founded in 1903 by Frank M. Schofield, a die-cutter who had previously apprenticed at Gorham Manufacturing and worked at the Stieff Company. The company underwent several name changes, becoming Herr-Schofield in a 1905 partnership after acquiring the bankrupt C. Klank & Sons company and finally changing to the Schofield Company in 1930 after buying the tools and dies of Jenkins & Jenkins. After Frank’s partner died in 1927 he took over the business completely (briefly renaming it the Frank M. Schofield Co.), securing government contracts to survive the Depression-era challenges before World War II broke out. Upon Frank's death in 1947 his wife Berthe, an accomplished silversmith and former circus performer, assumed control of the business and ran it until 1965 when it was sold to a local jeweler, Oscar Caplan. Caplan subsequently sold the business to the Stieff Company in 1967, which continued producing Schofield patterns until 1977, when the aging dies and declining demand led to their discontinuation.
