Sarah Elinor Hanby (known professionally as Sarah Hines and Sarah Legh) was born on August 25th, 1922 in Connersville, Indiana, and in her youth studied piano, attending Smith College from 1939 to 1943 for a degree in music. There she met her first husband, Ralph Gordon, and the two moved to Richmond, Indiana to raise their two children, where she taught music lessons and began to explore painting. In the early 1970s they divorced and she moved to Sarasota, Florida, where she continued to paint and frequently exhibited with the Sarasota Art Association. After the death of her second husband Charles Hines in 1982 she traveled extensively, meeting and marrying her third husband, Charles Legh, in England before returning to Florida, where she continued to paint the many places she’d seen on her journey. She died on October 13th, 2011 in her Casey Key home, and her works can be found in many private collections along the Suncoast.
