Samuel Grodensky was born April 21st, 1894 into an Orthodox Jewish household in Brooklyn, New York in 1894. The youngest of 11 children, he was sent to the National Academy of Design at his father’s insistence, but after his service in World War I he returned to work in his father’s wool and yarn factory, marrying Sadie Weinstein and having two daughters with her. In 1956, after the business closed, he and Sadie moved to Coral Gables, Florida, where he resumed studying his first love of art under Eugene Massin for the next three years, beginning with a highly detailed classical realist style before finally evolving into his own impressionistic free-flowing style. For the remainder of his life he painted works inspired by Judaica and his childhood memories along with the sunny landscapes of his new home, and passed away on March 5th, 1974.
