Royal Poinciana Scene, oil on masonite, signed lower right. Circa 1980s-1990s, with original crown molding. Comes with COA. Sam Newton is one of the 26 original African American artists who became known as the Florida Highwaymen. His brother, Harold Newton, was also one of the Highwaymen artists and taught Sam his artistic skills. They all lived in the Fort Pierce area of Florida and taught themselves how to paint, and were forced to sell their paintings from the trunks of their cars in the 1950's and '60's because of segregation and discrimination.
