Romilla Batra was born in 1937 in India, and graduated from St. Bede’s College in Shimla with a degree in Political Science and History in 1956. After immigrating to the United States she settled in California, where she discovered her calling in ceramics after attending a course at Berkeley under Michi Zimmerman in 1968. Over the next decade she studied with Dick Brenan, Gary Huntoon, Dale Roush, Thano Johnson, Bill Abright, and Ron Cooper, eventually graduating with her masters from the College of Marin in 1978. She began participating in exhibitions that same year, winning “Best in Show” at California Polytechnic State University and quickly gaining international acclaim for her intricate mastery of the Japanese Narikomi (colored clay agateware) and wheel-thrown porcelain forms. Deeply inspired by her Indian heritage and Western artistic training, she integrates traditional Japanese hand-building techniques with her personal visual storytelling, creating orbs and other forms by layering, slicing, and pressing variously pigmented clay bodies together to produce intricate geometric, organic, and marbled patterns that extend entirely through the clay wall. Today, her handcrafted Narikomi ceramics are widely exhibited and collected, admired for their technical precision, harmonious palettes, and quiet elegance.
