Polish-born artist Polia Pillin (1909–1992) immigrated to the United States as a teenager, eventually discovering pottery in New Mexico before gaining prominence with a solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1948. Moving to Los Angeles, she established the Pillin Art Pottery Company, where she utilized a unique "painting on clay" technique to decorate hand-thrown pottery crafted by her husband, William. Despite being viewed as an outsider in a male-dominated art world, her vibrant mid-century ceramic works supported her family for decades and remain highly sought after by modern collectors.
