Robert Zakanitch (Born 1935) American, Signed Pattern & Decoration Lithograph. Shows repeating patterns of vibrant flowers in the main square area. Signed and dated '78 in pencil bottom right. Numbered 26/100 and titled "Dragonseed" in pencil bottom left. "ES/" is written in the very bottom right corner below a round watermark with the word "Siena" in it, suggesting this piece was signed and distributed before an edition size had been determined. 

Condition: Minor fraying to edges. Otherwise great condition.

Robert Rahway Zakanitch was born in 1935 in Elizabeth, New Jersey and grew up in nearby Rahway. In the late 1960s he began experimenting with Color Field painting but would go on to be one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the mid 1970s. While working in the Color Field he was strict in adhering to an abstract style inspired by Minimalism until he learned about decorative imagery. He kept the same color schemes and structures, but incorporated floral motifs and a more painterly style. Zakanitch was exhibiting in New York as early as 1968. In 1975 he met Miriam Schapiro while he served as a guest instructor at the University of California, San Diego, and when they both returned to New York the next year they were the foundation that the Pattern & Decoration movement artists organized around. In 2017, needing additional space, he moved his residence and studio to Yonkers, New York, where he continues to work to this day. His work is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and many others.
