Robert William Vonnoh (1858-1933) was an American painter who became a key early figure in the country’s Impressionist movement. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he trained at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and the Académie Julian in Paris, where he absorbed the techniques and vibrant color sensibilities of French Impressionism. Vonnoh’s signature works include radiant landscapes and portraits characterized by loose, expressive brushwork and luminous color, most famously In Flanders Field (1890), depicting a poppy-filled meadow rendered with emotional immediacy. He also taught at major institutions such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, influencing a generation of young artists and helping to spread Impressionist ideals in America. Though less widely known than some of his contemporaries, Vonnoh’s work bridges the transatlantic exchange between French and American art at the turn of the 20th century.
