Robert Indiana, born Robert Clark on September 13th, 1928 in Newcastle, Indiana, was a seminal figure in the Pop Art movement known for his bold use of language and hard-edged style. He is most famous for his iconic LOVE image, which evolved from a 1964 card into monumental sculptures found in cities worldwide. The design’s distinct color palette and tilted “O” were reportedly influenced by his relationship with artist Ellsworth Kelly, who served as both his partner and mentor. Beyond painting and sculpture, Indiana was a versatile creator who designed theatrical sets and even starred in Andy Warhol’s experimental film, Eat. His work often utilized simple, direct words like EAT, HUG, and DIE to explore themes of American identity and personal history. After decades of success in New York, he spent his later years as a recluse on the island of Vinalhaven, Maine, where he passed away on May 19th, 2018.
