Richard Theodore Titlebaum (1939-2006) was an American writer, artist, antiquarian book collector, and literature professor who earned his doctorate from Harvard University in 1969. He shared his academic expertise by teaching literature at several prominent institutions, including Harvard, UC Berkeley, the University of Haifa, and the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1976, Titlebaum chose to pivot away from academia to devote himself full-time to painting, eventually participating in over 300 art events and winning 48 awards. His artwork often blended surrealistic styles with Old Testament religious motifs, reflecting his deep intellectual interest in Middle Eastern history. By the end of his life, his paintings focused almost exclusively on religious subjects, ultimately earning placement in permanent collections at the Fogg Art Museum and Miami City Hall. Following his death in Ann Arbor, Michigan, many of his large-scale paintings were bequeathed to the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation in New York City.
