Richard Satava (best known as Rick) was born in 1950 in Chico, California, and was first introduced to glassblowing in 1969 while at Oceana High School in Pacifica. He subsequently studied art and glassblowing at the College of San Mateo and California State University, Chico, where he worked as a technician for the glass shop until 1977 when he established his own glass studio called Satava Art Glass. His earliest pieces were all done in a classic Art Nouveau style, mirroring the aesthetics of the time, but in the early 80s he began to develop his own look, incorporating pictorial nature scenes with floral lines and images of harvest moons and nearby Mount Shasta. In the 1990s his focus shifted again, this time to ocean life and nautical themes, with his biggest success coming from the Moon Jellyfish series of paperweights and other art glass, and today he continues to produce glass with his assistants at the same facility, with his pieces highly sought after by collectors around the world.
