Richard Ely (1928-2009) was an influential American illustrator and portrait artist known for his elegant fashion renderings and depictions of cultural figures. After studying in Munich, he returned to the U.S., where his work was featured in advertisements for luxury brands like Estée Lauder and Saks Fifth Avenue. Ely was celebrated for capturing the likenesses of icons such as Diana Vreeland and Katharine Hepburn in his signature refined style. His work is held in major collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, and he taught for over seventeen years at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
