Rene Robles (1950=2010) was a prominent Filipino modernist artist, born Lucena City, Philippines) known for his prolific career spanning portraiture, still lifes, landscapes, and abstraction, and for founding the art movement “Assertionism,” which emphasizes art as a force that asserts meaning, freedom, and human dignity. Trained at the University of Santo Tomas and later in New York at institutions like the Art Students League, he developed a distinctive style marked by bold color, dynamic composition, and the transformation of everyday objects into thought-provoking images. Over several decades, Robles exhibited internationally across Asia, Europe, and the United States, earning recognition as one of the few Filipino artists to achieve global success, and his work often explored philosophical questions about the role of the artist and the power of art to transform perception.
