Rembrandt’s The Death of the Virgin (1639) is a large, dramatic etching that depicts the Virgin Mary on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles and heavenly attendants. The scene combines earthly solemnity with divine grandeur: the apostles gather in mourning around her, while angels and rays of light descend from above, signaling her passage into heaven. Rembrandt’s mastery of chiaroscuro heightens the emotional intensity, contrasting the dimly lit figures in the room with the radiant divine presence. Signed and dated in plate lower left, Rembrandt 1639.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher widely regarded as one of the greatest artists in European history and a central figure of the Dutch Golden Age. He was a master of chiaroscuro (light and shadow) and profound psychological insight, creating iconic works from biblical scenes to intimate, honest self-portraits. His innovative use of expressive brushwork and light brought a deep sense of humanity and drama to his subjects. Though he faced personal hardship, Rembrandt's prolific body of work has endured as a timeless exploration of human character and emotion.
