Ranulph de Bayeux Bye was born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1916, and made his home in Holicong, Pennsylvania. Considered one of the foremost watercolorists of his time, he found his greatest inspiration in the countryside of Bucks County, and became known for his masterful rendering of rural American landscapes, seascapes, and buildings. Bye was a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) and the Art Students League of New York, and was honored with memberships in the American Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Water Color Society (PWCS). He was a Crest Award recipient, a National Academy of Design Dolphin Fellow, and won exhibition awards from competitions throughout the country, with countless works in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Temple University, Moore College of Art and Design, the Reading Public Museum, the William Penn Memorial Museum, and the Michener Art Museum. He also published several books that are now considered foundational for American watercolorists, including Victorian Sketchbook and The Vanishing Depot (1973), Painting Buildings in Watercolor (1994), and Ranulph Bye’s Bucks County (1997). He passed away at a hospital in nearby Doylestown on November 19th, 2003.
