Robert Overman Hodgell (1922–2000) was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and educator renowned for his expressive linocuts and contributions to religious and regionalist art. Born in Mankato, Kansas, he was the son of a Methodist minister and was profoundly influenced by American Regionalist painter John Steuart Curry, under whom he apprenticed in 1939 and later assisted on significant mural projects, including those at the Kansas State Capitol. Hodgell earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, studying printmaking under Alfred Sessler. His career encompassed teaching positions at institutions such as the Des Moines Art Center, University of Illinois, and Eckerd College in Florida, where he played a pivotal role in developing the visual arts program. Hodgell's artwork, characterized by its dynamic compositions and social commentary, often explored themes of faith, justice, and human experience. His pieces are held in numerous collections, including the Library of Congress and the Ringling Museum of Art, reflecting his enduring impact on American art.
