Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, phase IV, ca. 500 to 700 CE. An evocative, action- packed mold-made stirrup jar featuring the same battle scene on each side. Shown in relief, one warrior grabs the head of another while holding a mace in his other hand; the other warrior is tilted back as if about to be defeated, grasping his opponent's hand with one of his. However, in the other hand, his long, pointed spear or dagger is about to pierce the side of his adversary. Creamy white and tan pigment gives the artwork depth and detail. Size: 5.25" W x 8.5" H (13.3 cm x 21.6 cm)
Condition:
Expertly repaired and restored; notably the handle and spout have both been reattached with the break lines restored. Nice deposits on surface with some wear to the original pigment.

Provenance:

ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from the 1970s to 2008.
